Qur’an 3:144 - Was Jesus a messenger who died or not?

There are different answers to the question in the Qur’an:

Jesus was a messenger who died - Qur’an 3:144

“Muhammad is not but a messenger. [Other] messengers have passed on before him. So if he was to die or be killed, would you turn back on your heels [to unbelief]? And he who turns back on his heels will never harm Allah at all; but Allah will reward the grateful.” (Qur’an 3:144) Jesus is not more than a messenger. Messengers before him had died.

Jesus was a messenger who did not die - Qur’an 4:158

“Rather, Allah raised him to Himself. And ever is Allah Exalted in Might and Wise.” (Qur’an 4:158) Allah raised Jesus up. Jesus did not die. Jesus is more than a messenger, because he did not die.

Conclusion

There is a contradiction in the Qur’an about the position of the messenger Jesus. A Muslim has no clear guidance what to believe: Jesus is an ordinary messenger or Jesus is an extraordinary messenger who did not die.
