Qur’an 3:59 - Adam created from clay or not?

There are different answers to the question in the Qur’an: how was Adam created?

Adam was created from dust - Qur’an 3:59

“Indeed, the example of Jesus to Allah is like that of Adam. He created Him from dust; then He said to him, "Be," and he was.” (Qur’an 3:59)

Adam was created out of wet clay - Qur’an 38:71

“[So mention] when your Lord said to the angels, "Indeed, I am going to create a human being from clay.” (Qur’an 38:71)

Adam was created out of sounding clay and mud - Qur’an 15:26

“We created man from sounding clay, from mud moulded into shape;” (Qur’an 15:26 – Yusuf Ali) Sounding is black burnt.

Adam was created with Allah’s two hands - Qur’an 38:75

“[Allah] said, "O Iblees, what prevented you from prostrating to that which I created with My hands? Were you arrogant [then], or were you [already] among the haughty?" (Qur’an 38:75)

Man was created from sperm

“He has created man from a sperm-drop; and behold this same (man) becomes an open disputer!” (Qur’an 16:4)

Man was created from blood

“Created man, out of a (mere) clot of congealed blood:” (Qur’an 96:2)


The search for truth is based on the observation of facts systematically and logically in any context. We have six different answers to the question how Adam was created. This can be called a contradiction in the Qur’an.
