Qur’an 3:144 - Did Jesus die already?

Jesus is a big mystery in the Qur’an. Most Muslims believe that he was taken to heaven immediately and did not die. The Qur’an has two contradicting verses about it:

Jesus died, because all messengers died before Muhammad - Qur’an 3:144

Muhammad is not but a messenger. [Other] messengers have passed on before him."; Pickthall: "Muhammad is but a messenger, messengers (the like of whom) have passed away before him.…” (Qur’an 3:144)

Jesus did not die, he went to Allah - Qur’an 4:158

“Rather, Allah raised him to Himself. And ever is Allah Exalted in Might and Wise.” (Qur’an 4:158)

Muslim reply

Some Muslims try to refer to the Yusuf Ali translation, who translates with “m any were the apostle”. That suggests there could be a messenger who did not die: Jesus. “Muhammad is no more than an apostle: many Were the apostle that passed away before him” (Qur’an 3:144 – Yusuf Ali). However, Yusuf Ali is not the most respected translation for precision. The other authorized translations translate with “all” instead of “many”.

The Qur’an says in one verse that Jesus died. In another Qur’an verse there is a denial. Therefore there is a contradiction in the Qur’an.
