Is the Qur'an a bridge to Christian faith?

The Qur’an mentions in many surahs that it is a continuation of the Previous Scriptures, the Bible. There is also praise for the Bible and a call to use it for guidance.

Bridge between Qur’an and Bible

In the Qur’an is a call to make a bridge between Christians and Muslims:

“Invite to the way of your Lord with wisdom and good instruction, and argue with them in a way that is best. Indeed, your Lord is most knowing of who has strayed from His way, and He is most knowing of who is [rightly] guided” (Qur’an 16:125).

This bridge between Islam and faith in Jesus Christ is possible because the Qur’an is a mix of older religions, including Christianity and also because the Qur’an mentions the Christians as the ones to be most close to Muslims. Christians are used to make bridges to other religions and there are many examples in the New Testament, including the invitation to faith in Jesus Christ for believers of the pagan Greek religion:

“People of Athens! I see that in every way you are very religious. For as I walked around and looked carefully at your objects of worship, I even found an altar with this inscription: to an unknown god. So you are ignorant of the very thing you worship—and this is what I am going to proclaim to you.” (Acts 17:22-23).

After this introduction the people heard about the good news of Jesus Christ, that they will receive forgiveness of sin when they believe in him. In the same way it is possible to make a bridge between the Qur’an and the Bible by for example mentioning the exceptional nature of Jesus (Isa) in the Qur’an.

Jesus as teacher of God’s will

The Qur’an gives descriptions of Jesus in his role as a teacher of God’s will. Jesus has in the Qur’an all wisdom from the Gospel and the Previous Scriptures, including the Torah and Psalms (Qur’an 5:110). The Qur’an doesn’t give the full knowledge about Jesus, but that there is more knowledge about Jesus available in the Gospel and Muslims and even Muhammad may ask Christians about it: “If you (Mohammed) doubt what we have revealed to you ask those that have read the Scriptures before you” (Qur’an 10:94).

This is a bridge to the Bible and an open door to learn more about the “straight path” of Jesus:

“And [I have come] confirming what was before me of the Torah and to make lawful for you some of what was forbidden to you. And I have come to you with a sign from your Lord, so fear Allah and obey me. Indeed, Allah is my Lord and your Lord, so worship Him. That is the straight path." (Qur’an 3:50-51).

The Qur’an is an instrument to proclaim the oneness of God and it contains many verses for further study in the Previous Scriptures. Therefore the Qur’an can be used as a bridge to the Bible. The Holy Spirit can convince people of the validity of the Bible to find certainty about Paradise.
