Qur'an 43:69-70: Does the Qur'an give certainty for Muslims to enter Paradise?

Some Muslims claim that the Qur’an provides certainty for Muslims to go to Paradise and they refer to the following verse:“[You] who believed in Our verses and were Muslims. Enter Paradise, you and your kinds, delighted." (Qur’an 43:69-70)

Qur’an has only conditional statements to enter Paradise

The verses are telling us that Muslims will enter Paradise. However, Qur’an 43:69 has a conditional statement: "who believed in Our verses and were Muslims". So, first a Muslim has to believe in all verses and has to be a good Muslim, which is submitted to God in a perfect way. This is a challenge for every Muslim, because fulfilment of all divine laws needs a pure and perfect man. Only Jesus is according to the Qur’an such a pure man (Qur’an 19:19).

Only Allah decides who will enter Paradise

The Qur’an is also telling Muslims that they cannot be sure about going to Paradise. Allah decides, it is not a personal decision of a Muslim. Qur’an and Islam are teaching salvation by good deeds, and Muslims will never be sure whether they are good enough or not: "Knowest thou not that to Allah (alone) belongeth the dominion of the heavens and the earth? He punisheth whom He pleaseth, and He forgiveth whom He pleaseth: and Allah hath power over all things" (Qur’an 5:40).

The Qur’an has no salvation

In the Qur’an, Allah has already decided for a Muslim that the final destination will be hell of paradise (Qur’an 5:40, 11:34, 16:37, 39:44). According to the Qur’an, the eternal destiny of a soul is based on whether or not the good deeds outweigh our bad ones (Qur’an 101:6-11). The Qur’an denies that a Muslim has any assurance for the forgiveness of all his sins: “Those whom they call upon do desire (for themselves) means of access to their Lord, - even those who are nearest: they hope for His Mercy and fear His Wrath: for the Wrath of thy Lord is something to take heed of” (Qur’an 17:57).

The Qur’an cannot give certainty about entering Paradise for Muslims. There are only verses with conditions about going to Paradise. According to the Qur’an only Allah knows and a Muslim is not sure about entering Paradise. The only hope to escape hell comes from the Previous Scriptures, the Torah, Psalms and Gospel (Qur’an 2:4, 2:136, 2:285, 4:136, 29:46). The Gospel has the answer to the question about escaping hell: “I am the Resurrection and the Life; he who believes in Me will live even if he dies” (John 11:25).
