Deliverance in the Qur’an

In the Qur’an, deliverance has attention in many verses. It is a complex activity, connected with ransom, moral values and faith. This differs from Christianity, where deliverance is possible through the sacrifice of Jesus.

Conditions for deliverance

Need for deliverance

“And remember Our servant Job, when he called to his Lord, ‘Indeed, Satan has touched me with hardship and torment.’” (Qur’an 38:41) “…but what comes to you of evil, [O man], is from yourself …” (Qur’an 4:79) “So We said, "O Adam, indeed this is an enemy to you and to your wife. Then let him not remove you from Paradise so you would suffer“ (Qur´an 20:117)

Credits for good deeds

“He that doeth good shall have ten times as much to his credit: He that doeth evil shall only be recompensed according to his evil...” (Qur’an 6:160) “Then, he whose balance (of good deeds) will be (found) heavy, Will be in a life of good pleasure and satisfaction. But he whose balance (of good deeds) will be (found) light,- Will have his home in a (bottomless) Pit. And what will explain to thee what this is? (It is) a Fire Blazing fiercely!” (Qur’an 101:6-11).

Deliverance and rejection of faith

“As to those who reject Faith, and die rejecting,- never would be accepted from any such as much gold as the earth contains, though they should offer it for ransom. For such is (in store) a penalty grievous, and they will find no helpers.” (Qur’an 3:91) “Of no effect is the repentance of those who continue to do evil, until death faces one of them, and he says, "Now have I repented indeed;" nor of those who die rejecting Faith: for them have We prepared a punishment most grievous” (Qur’an 4:18) “As to those who reject Faith,- if they had everything on earth, and twice repeated, to give as ransom for the penalty of the Day of Judgment, it would never be accepted of them, theirs would be a grievous penalty.” (Qur’an 5:36) “Even if the wrong-doers had all that there is on earth, and as much more, (in vain) would they offer it for ransom from the pain of the Penalty on the Day of Judgment: but something will confront them from Allah, which they could never have counted upon!” (Qur’an 39:47) “This Day shall no ransom be accepted of you, nor of those who rejected Allah." Your abode is the Fire: that is the proper place to claim you: and an evil refuge it is!” (Qur’an 57:15)

Uncertainty

“Those whom they call upon do desire (for themselves) means of access to their Lord, - even those who are nearest: they hope for His Mercy and fear His Wrath: for the Wrath of thy Lord is something to take heed of” (Qur’an 17:57).

Blessing of Abraham

“And We ransomed him with a momentous sacrifice: And We left (this blessing) for him among generations (to come) in later times:” (Qur’an 37:107-108)

Deliverance through Jesus

“He said: "So (it will be): Thy Lord saith, ´that is easy for Me: and (We wish) to appoint him as a Sign unto men and a Mercy from Us´:It is a matter (so) decreed."” (Qur’an 19:21) “Behold! Allah said: "O Jesus! I will take thee and raise thee to Myself and clear thee (of the falsehoods) of those who blaspheme; I will make those who follow thee superior to those who reject faith, to the Day of Resurrection: Then shall ye all return unto me, and I will judge between you of the matters wherein ye dispute.” (Qur’an 3:55)
