Qur’an 2:29 - The heaven or the earth created first?

1. First the earth, then the heaven - Qur’an 2:29
“It is He who created for you all of that which is on the earth. Then He directed Himself to the heaven, [His being above all creation], and made them seven heavens, and He is Knowing of all things” (Qur´an 2:29)
Some Muslims says that this verse mentions the development of the heavens into seven layers, not their initial creation. However, first part indeed talks about “directed Himself to the heaven” in contrast to “earth” and this cannot be something else than an initial creation. In the Qur’an, the Arabic word heavens is related with both the sky above the earth as with the entire universe. In 7th century, when the Qur’an was compiled, people in those days believed that the earth was the center of the universe according to Ptolemy [1]. Therefore the a creation of the earth first and then the heaven fits well in the thinking of 7th century people.

2. First the heaven, then the earth - Qur’an 79:27-30
“Are you a more difficult creation or is the heaven? Allah constructed it. He raised its ceiling and proportioned it. And He darkened its night and extracted its brightness. And after that He spread the earth.” (Qur´an 79:27-30)
Muslims who tried to refute this contradiction with Qur’an 2;29 said that Qur’an 79:27-30 only describes the spreading of the earth. However, However, spreading of the earth is initial creation. It is also in line with the view of the Qur’an that the Previous Scripture, the Bible is supported. And the Bible is clear that first the heaven was created and then the earth: “And God called the firmament Heaven.” (Genesis 1:8) and then: “And God called the dry land Earth” (Genesis 1:10). This is also confirmed by modern science.

3. Conclusion
We have to conclude that there is a contradiction in the Qur´an about the creation of the heaven and the earth.
