Qur’an 3:59 - Is Jesus like Adam or not?

Another mystery about Jesus is how he can be compared with Adam. The Qur’an has two faces to Jesus and Adam:

1. Jesus is like Adam - Qur’an 3:59

“Indeed, the example of Jesus to Allah is like that of Adam. He created Him from dust; then He said to him, "Be," and he was. “ (Qur’an 3:59)

2. Jesus is more than Adam - Qur’an 2:36, 3:45, 19:19

“But Satan caused them to slip out of it and removed them from that [condition] in which they had been. And We said,’Go down, [all of you], as enemies to one another, and you will have upon the earth a place of settlement and provision for a time.’ “ (Qur’an 2:36)“When the angels said, ´O Mary, indeed Allah gives you good tidings of a word from Him, whose name will be the Messiah, Jesus, the son of Mary - distinguished in this world and the Hereafter and among those brought near [to Allah]´. “ (Qur’an 3:45) “He said, ‘I am only the messenger of your Lord to give you [news of] a pure boy.’ “ (Qur’an 19:19)Qur’an 19:19 is about the "faultness" of Jesus Christ, the only place in the Qur’an where someone is called without sin. A strong contrast with Adam, the father of the first sin.

3. Muslim reply

Qur’an 3:59 is making a comparison not as an individual but to the nature of their existence. Adam was born miraculously without a mother and father and Jesus was born miraculously without a father. However, we cannot retrieve this explanation from the verse: “the example of Jesus to Allah is like that of Adam”. In case it was not as an individual, the Qur’an verse had to be more explicit to exclude the possibility that it was not about an individual. Outside that: Jesus was born from a mother, while Adam had no mother. So the example of the nature of their existence is not correct.

4. Conclusion

The Qur’an says in many verses that Jesus and Adam don’t have everything in common. A contradiction with another Qur’an verse that Jesus is like Adam.
