John 16:7 – Is filling with the Holy Spirit of Elizabeth in Luke 1:41 agains promises of Jesus?

Some Muslims are only reading the Bible to find contradictions. The followers of Islam are trying to refute Christian claims to John 16:7 that the Comforter is the Holy Spirit. Muslims want to prove that the Comforter is Muhammad. They ask why Jesus said in John 16:7 "If I do not go away the Comforter will not come to you". Because Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit Luke 1:41, they claim the Comforter could not be the Holy Spirit in John 16:7. We need to do some research about the validality of this theory.

1. Elizabeth was filled with Holy Spirit because Jesus was not on earth

“… for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you” (John 16:7 – KJV). This verse means that when Jesus is with you, the Comforter cannot be with you. In case of Luke 1:41, when Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit, Jesus was not with her. The logic of John 16:7 was not broken and she could be filled with the Holy Spirit as Jesus promised in John 16:7. There has never been a situation in which someone was filled with the Holy Spirit, while Jesus was in his body in earth.

2. Comforter is the Holy Spirit

Comforter in John 16:7 is explained by Jesus in Acts 1:7 where he is talking about the arrival of a divine tool inside the human soul: But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth. (KJV) and also in Acts 2:38: “Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost”. (KJV) We notice that the Comforter is the indwelling gift of the Holy Spirit as described by many verses in the New Testament.

3. Conclusion

That Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit is not against the promises of Jesus in John 16:7. Therefore Muslims cannot claim that the Comforter is Muhammad.
